​Lessons from a Firefly

 "I've learned this summer that wonder rarely announces itself before it arrives."

One of our STEAM in the PARK campers recently shared this photo of her sweet niece holding a firefly. Her aunt was simply taking pictures of a summer evening, the kind we all wish we could bottle up and keep. It wasn't until later that they realized they had captured something extraordinary—the exact moment the firefly lit up.

Not before. Not after. Right then. A split second. A tiny miracle caught in time.

It made me think about all the moments we've experienced these past few weeks. We've crossed marshes, climbed dunes, explored trails, and stood in forests where synchronous fireflies turned the darkness into a silent fireworks show. We've chased big adventures, laughed around campfires, and collected memories across miles of road.

Yet here was a reminder that wonder doesn't always arrive in the big moments. Sometimes it rests quietly in the hands of a young girl enjoying a summer evening. The truth is, so much of what matters in life happens quietly. We don't always recognize it while it's happening. Sometimes we only see it later when we pause long enough to look back.

A firefly is small. Easy to miss. But when the moment is right, it shines. Maybe that's the lesson. Most of us spend far too much time wondering if we're doing enough. We worry that our efforts are too small, our reach too limited, our impact too insignificant.

But a firefly doesn't light up the whole forest. It simply carries the light it was given. And maybe that's all we're being asked to do too. Offer kindness when we can. Encourage someone who needs it. Show up. Pay attention. Be a light in the corner of the world we've been given. Her aunt thought she was taking a simple picture. Instead, she captured a reminder.
