Prepare for an unforgettable experience exploring the Potomac River and its surrounding landscapes, where environmental science meets history in a hands-on journey through Maryland’s unique ecosystems. From native plant restoration to fish migration, we’ll explore how human actions affect both natural resources and wildlife, gaining a deep understanding of environmental stewardship.

🌟 Highlights of the Week:

• Native Plant Restoration
  Discover the critical role native plants play in sustaining a healthy ecosystem and watershed. We’ll examine the impacts of human activity on the environment and learn ways to support restoration and protect native species. Through hands-on restoration activities, we’ll leave a positive mark on the Potomac ecosystem.
• Potomac Gorge Field Study
  In this unique habitat, we’ll investigate the complex relationships between humans and natural resources. Using data collection and observational methods, we’ll learn how human behavior in protected areas can both help and hinder ecosystem health, especially in a region as delicate as the Potomac Gorge.
• River Herring Research
  River herring play a vital role in the Potomac’s ecosystem. Through field studies, we’ll dive into their characteristics, migration patterns, and challenges they face, such as waterway blockages. Together, we’ll explore fish identification basics and discuss innovative methods aimed at aiding their migration and survival.
• Colonial Farming Exploration
  Step back in time to explore the agricultural practices of colonial settlers. We’ll delve into historical farming methods, learning about crop rotation, early sustainability techniques, and how farming practices have influenced both local culture and ecosystem health.
  

Accommodations:

• Participants will stay at the Alice Ferguson Foundation in Accokeek, Maryland, nestled close to the Potomac River. We’ll be in bunk houses with shared rooms and communal bathrooms, creating a cozy, community-focused atmosphere where campers can unwind, reflect, and share experiences.

Costs:

• $660 per camper
• The program fee will cover food, accommodations, program fees, supplies, and equipment for all activities.
