Overview:
Join us for an unforgettable week of exploration and learning at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area! Dive into the rich history and stunning natural beauty of this iconic region. Each day brings new adventures—from discovering the secrets of Alcatraz Island to exploring and hiking around the Marin Headlands. We’ll also study the vibrant coastal ecosystems through tidepool exploration, uncovering the wonders of marine life along the Pacific coast.

🌟 Highlights of the Week:
Alcatraz Island

• Native American Occupation: Uncover the pivotal story of the 1969-1971 Native American occupation of Alcatraz, a key moment in the Native American civil rights movement, and learn about its lasting impact on U.S. policies regarding Indigenous peoples.
• Military History: Explore Alcatraz’s earlier days as a military fort during the Civil War and its later transformation into a military prison and federal penitentiary.

Golden Gate Recreation Area

• Ecology and Biodiversity: Explore the incredible range of ecosystems in the GGNRA, from coastal scrub to redwood forests, and learn about conservation efforts to protect threatened species like the Mission blue butterfly and California red-legged frog.
• Marine and Coastal Conservation: Explore the marine ecosystems along the Pacific coast through tidepooling, learning about the rich biodiversity and efforts to protect these delicate coastal habitats from pollution and climate change.​

Accommodations:

• We’ll be based at NatureBridge at Golden Gate National Recreation Area.  These are bunk houses with bunk beds and shared bathrooms.

Costs:

• $720 per camper
• The program fee will cover food, accommodations, program fees, supplies, and equipment for all activities.

Beginning & End

• Registration is 2-4:00 pm on Day 1
• Checkout by 10:00 am on Day 5
  

Important dates:

• January 31, 2025: Application deadline
• February 5, 2025: Camp acceptance/rejection notifications sent
• February 15, 2025: $100 nonrefundable deposit deadline
• May 1, 2025: FULL STEAM in the PARK payment deadline
• May 15, 2025: Full payment is no longer refundable
